EASA A2 — the exam for flying closer to people (class C2)

The A1/A3 certificate gets you into the open category, but with a heavier class C2 drone (up to 4 kg) it keeps you far from people. To fly closer — filming in town, working next to a client — you need the A2 certificate of competency (A2 CofC).

What A2 allows

Three steps to the A2 certificate

  1. Pass A1/A3, the online exam (see the A1/A3 guide).
  2. Practical self-training: practise in A3 conditions (away from people) and declare that you have done so (self-declaration).
  3. An additional theory exam of 30 multiple-choice questions with the national aviation authority or an entity it recognises — unlike A1/A3, usually supervised. The pass mark is 75 %.

The certificate is valid for five years and recognised in every EASA country.

What the A2 exam covers

Regulation (EU) 2019/947 sets three subjects:

The official EASA exam questions are not published. Our A2 bank holds 120 practice questions written from the official syllabus, each with an explanation of the correct answer — in English and Serbian.

A sample question

EASA A2 · Meteorology

What is a gust?

  1. A steady wind blowing at the same speed for more than an hour
  2. A vertical air current caused by the ground heating up
  3. A sudden, brief increase in wind speed ✓
  4. A change in wind direction with height
Explanation: A gust is a sudden, short-lived increase in wind speed above the mean. It can destabilise an unmanned aircraft, so under the EASA A2 meteorology syllabus it has to be taken into account when planning a flight.
